Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – [Sept 2025] – Engineers Without Borders Tanzania (EWB-Tanzania) has launched an urgent appeal, seeking dedicated volunteer experts in solid waste management to address pressing environmental challenges and foster sustainable development across the nation. The registered Non-Profit Organisation, a proud member of Engineers Without Borders International, is mobilising professionals to lend their expertise to critical projects aimed at innovating waste solutions.

EWB-Tanzania comprises a vibrant community of professional engineers and motivated non-engineering professionals committed to providing real-life engineering solutions to human needs. The organisation partners with local communities to implement sustainable development projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their extensive work spans Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), Education, Health, Agriculture, Environmental Conservation, Energy, Climate Change, Construction, Research, and ICT, all aimed at enhancing lives through collaborative, impactful initiatives.

With rapid urbanisation and economic growth, Tanzania faces significant challenges in managing its increasing solid waste generation. Recognising the critical need for innovative and sustainable approaches, EWB-Tanzania is now focusing its expertise on this vital area, inviting professionals to lend their skills to create lasting change.

1. Waste-to-Energy Solutions: Experts capable of designing, advising on, or implementing initiatives that convert waste into valuable energy resources.
2. Waste Valorization: Specialists who can guide on transforming waste into useful products, such as compost, recyclables, biogas, or alternative materials, promoting a circular economy.
3. Billing and Financial Systems: Professionals experienced in developing or improving efficient billing and revenue collection systems for waste management services, ensuring financial sustainability.
4. Sustainable Disposal Practices: Experts to address the overreliance on traditional disposal sites and promote alternative approaches including waste minimization, robust recycling programs, and recovery strategies.
5. Plastics Management: Specialists to advise on comprehensive strategies for reducing, reusing, recycling, and effectively regulating plastic waste to mitigate its environmental impact.
